Vigil. A candlelight vigil.

For everyone who has dared to say the truth despite those who disagree.

I came back from a whole afternoon of mind-bending. First was the lecture by Prof Hassan Riaz (which brought to mind this Yes, Prime Minister clip when he presented his studies), followed by lunch with the newly-imported former La Trobeans and friends, and then dinner at Tiba’s, where we discussed further the idea of surrendering to the ‘white mentality’ and letting it dictate our paradigm for action/reaction.

And I came home mentally exhausted. Prof Martin and his explanation of the differences between the genetics of sex determination and sex development was put on hold when I.. fell asleep.

But then I got hold of Raja Petra Kamaruddin’s article, the one that bestowed upon him charges under the Sedition Act and three nights in jail (he finally agreed to bail but four hours ago).

So I dedicate this post to all those who vie to speak their minds, regardless of how much it hurts.

I’ve said this before; let me say it again:

‘Not scared’. Let’s put that on a t-shirt.

*Updated: RPK is now out and back in business. Check him out here.

  1. 1 someone

    you’re a hypocrite.

stop being nice to people to their face but online insult them incessantly.

syazwina, you are an insult to muslims.

  2. Well, someone. I appreciate your honesty with me.

So to extend that courtesy, I’m going to leave your comment on my blog, however irrelevant it is to the post. As a reminder to myself, mostly.

And just a note, if you don’t mind: You might want to use your home IP, rather than your university’s. I’m pretty IT-illiterate, but it showed up on the email notification.

If you chose anonymity, I want you to have it completely. As it is, I’ll try to ignore that I know where you study.

    JazaakAllah khayr for reminding me.

  3. 3 someone else

    To Someone,

How petty is that, honestly come on. Hardly anyone who says to someone that they are insult to Muslims is a Muslim themselves. You South Eastern/Easter/moderate types are the first to cry fowl when they are called bad Muslims by the ‘fundy’ brothers and sisters.

    Shame on you.

Go go syazwinarant! :D

    To someone,

Before you give advice to another about being nice to people in person and then insult them online later… why don’t you reveal who you are and say what you have to say then? Hypocritical much?

  6. :)

Thanks for all the support, everyone.

But nah, it’s just some resentment from my criticisms of Salam Cafe on Facebook, I reckon. it’s not the Malaysian government (yet), and I’m more vocal about them, so I can’t really be bothered.

Funny, how criticism is a living practise in third-world countries, and yet people in more advanced societies can’t even stomach it. Or maybe it’s just an exclusive case example. Hm. Whatever.

But *i* am a critic of your Salam Cafe criticisms. It doesn’t mean i’m resentful about it, or that you are anywhere near being a “insult” to Muslims. And anyway, if it’s a result of your opinions of SC, then that kind of attitude displayed by “someone” is totally and utterly inappropriate.

  8. Lol.

Alev, just finish your essay, already.

    ;)
